Performance Assessment of Giant Reed-Based Building Components

The growing concern for the reduction of energy needs and environmental impact building sector has placed emphasis on possibilities offered by natural materials. adoption agricultural by-products seems to be promising in line with circular economy paradigm. Materials such as hemp straw have been extensively adopted contemporary construction, but nevertheless, potential use giant reed not sufficiently investigated despite being a common infesting plant abundantly available all over planet. This work focuses performances assessment lime/cement–reeds mixtures base materials design new components (bricks, blocks, panels loose insulation) that can used both bio-based construction existing buildings energy-efficiency retrofit. main experimental campaign are by-products, lime, cement local recycled aggregates. evaluation physical, mechanical thermal properties lime–reed cement–reed composites presented. results conductivities (between 0.245 0.191 W/m K) (compressive strengths between 0.848 1.509 MPa, flexural 0.483 0.829 MPa) allow meeting requirements non-bearing blocks. outcomes show how blocks made abovementioned mixture good performance thermo-physical behavior when compared conventional hollow clay or same thickness.
